White-bellied Emerald

Scientific name: Amazilia candida
Conservation status: Least Concern
Size: 9-11 cm

The white-bellied emerald is a species of hummingbird from the family Trochilidae. It is found in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. I was lucky enough to see this stunning little bird whilst I was in Belize visiting World Land Trust’s in country partner Programme for Belize. I sat watching them outwit the overly aggressive Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds (see below).

This painting has been created using a mixture of watercolour, gouache, pencil colour an ink pen. I donated this picture to a very good friend who spent many years living in Belize.
